CONFLICT is a normal part of life. In the workplace the potential for conflict often increases because:
  • People from diverse backgrounds spend a lot of time together.
  • Employees come with differing values, assumptions, goals, and expectations.
  • The atmosphere can be competitive as staff seek to do their best and demonstrate that they are qualified for their positions and ready for promotion.
  • Your staff is highly motivated
    and creative.
  • Stress created by deadlines and marketplace competition impacts the working atmosphere.
  • The effects of stress from their personal lives & homes accompany staff to work.

WHY MEDIATION?
MEDIATION is an effective and affordable way to
address and resolve workplace conflict.
UNRESOLVED CONFLICT can:
  • Poison workplace atmosphere & morale
  • Significantly decrease efficiency and productivity
  • Reduce the quality of work performed by all parties, not just those in the dispute
  • Result in the loss of valued employees who leave to escape the conflict situation

WHY AN OUTSIDE MEDIATOR?
  • Managers & supervisors may have or be perceived to have their own agenda.
  • Sometimes managers/supervisors may be part of the conflict.
  • Managers/supervisors, having seen the conflict develop and having their own workplace relationships with the parties, may find it hard to be impartial.
  • Staff may feel more confident that being open in mediation will not have a negative impact on performance reviews & promotion possibilities.
With an OUTSIDE MEDIATOR the entire process is confidential and there is less potential for the current matter and its resolution to impact negatively on future situations.
What Can You Expect If You Contract With GRASSLANDS MEDIATION?
IF THE CONFLICT INVOLVES 2 OR 3 PEOPLE:
A mediator will meet with each of the persons to assess the conflict and determine the issues that need to be addressed. Following this, mediation sessions will be conducted with the parties involved. A final report written in consultation with the parties in the dispute will be forwarded to the person making the referral.
IF THE CONFLICT INVOLVES A GROUP OF PEOPLE OR AN ENTIRE DEPARTMENT
Group interventions are conducted in two phases with each phase constituting a separate contract.
Phase 1: Assessment
A mediator will meet with each person in the group (depending on numbers) to assess the nature of the conflict and the issues creating difficulties. Based on the interviews, a report will be created, outlining the nature of the issues that need addressing along with recommendations for the kind of interventions needed to address these issues. The report will be submitted to the department head, the supervisor one level up (if relevant), and the entire department.
Phase 2: Implementation
Upon entering a second contract Grasslands Mediation will, in consultation with management, implement the interventions recommended in Phase 1. The nature of the interventions vary from situation to situation and will be tailored to your particular workplace, thereby creating the potential to transform a conflicted and difficult situation into one that achieves the results desired by management and one that energizes and motivates employees in a positive work atmosphere.
CONFIDENTIALITY & WORKPLACE MEDIATION
For mediation to be successful, parties must feel safe in expressing their viewpoints. Therefore the confidentiality of the process becomes important. Consequently Grasslands Mediation will NOT report back to the referring manager/supervisor the content of specific conversations that happened in any of the interviews and/or mediation sessions.

Call Grasslands Mediation for a free, confidential, no-obligation
conversation about your situation and whether our involvement as
mediator/facilitator would be an appropriate way to deal with the matter.
